Project Objectives

. Making a better learning experience by making the process of learning and teaching pleasant

. Reducing strict rules and regulations of the technical drawing course

. Strengthening the power of 3D visualization of objects

. Emotional Design

My Role & Project Overview

For my industrial design master's Thesis, I designed "Magic Box," a learning-aid product for technical drawing lessons (the aim of this lesson is creating and enhancing spatial visualization, especially for teenage students of art schools) with the approach of making this lesson pleasant.

The results of the analysis of the main survey

A

A: Is the Technical Drawing course your favorite one?

The White- Yes, more than other courses.
The Blue- Yes, less than other courses.
The Yellow- Yes, as much as other courses.
The Purple- No, I prefer not to take this course at all.

B

B: Do you need help with doing technical drawing course assignments?

The White- Yes, I cannot understand it at all.
The Blue- Yes, doing it takes a lot of work for me.
The Yellow- Yes, doing it takes work for me.
The Purple- No, it's easy for me to do it.

C

C: Are you able to imagine the volume in your mind?

The White- I can imagine the 3D volumes clearly and easily.
The Blue-Yes, I can imagine the 3D volumes somewhat in my mind.
The Yellow: Yes, but I cannot imagine all of the 3D volumes' views.
The Purple: No, I cannot imagine the 3D Volumes.

D

D: Which learning-aid tools have more effectively taught you technical drawing skills?
The White- Drawing tools such as diagrams, charts, and poster.
The Blue- Non-drawing tools such as images, pictures, slides, and videos.
The Yellow- 3D Tools such as models, maquette, etc.
The Purple- Projectors, which show different dimensions of volumes in a big size.

E

E: What particular points could you mention for considering the Technical Drawing course as challenging?

The White- Being so dull and unattractive.
The Blue- So dull and unattractive books of this course.
The Yellow- The view of volumes is not tangible.
The Purple- Lack of stimulation of visual pleasure and creativity.

The results of interviews and questionnaires

The primary research conducted on six youths from the conservatory using a sampling method yielded the following general results: graphic design students. However, students need help with technical difficulties as their knowledge of this course is limited to a few books. Unfortunately, these books do not have an effective educational result for about 90% of the sample community, and 80% are not interested in them. Only 30% are interested but have not received a practical positive impact.

During an interview with some technical drawing high school teachers, it was revealed that technical drawing is one of the unloveliest subjects for students due to a lack of interest, complexity, and non-tangibility in visualizing the three views of the product. This concern is shared by conservatory graduates and all young people who aspire to fields with a high coefficient of technical drawings, such as industrial design. Despite their learning efforts, they often need help understanding the subject because of their apathy and weak visualization power.

Thus, Students and professors need an effective teaching method and tool to facilitate and accelerate the teaching and learning process of technical drawing. The question for technical drawing teachers is, "How can I make the learning of technical drawing easier for my students?"

Design Details

Magic Box is a learning-aid product for students who want to improve their technical drawing understanding and empower their visualization.
This product has different parts, all in pastel colors made of Polypropylen (PP) and produced by injection molding. The main aims of design include creating and enhancing spatial visualization, especially for teenage students) with the approach of making this lesson pleasant.

+How to use it:

Step 1-
See and touch basic volumes and then recognize three views of them on the-
cards(the user can become familiar with 3 views of volumes first in this step)

Step2-
Print three views of primary volumes (front, left, top) to understand what three views of an object are.

Step 3-
Build volumes (by assembling the parts according to 3 printed views on the cards.

Step 4-
Build the objects by your imagination, then draw views on the empty cards and finally draw the third view on the cards, which only have two views of objects (without having the objects recognize the views)
